'Through time it gets crazier' — Punk, rave, and hip hop culture: Take a tour through how subcultures have shaped beauty in i-D’s latest video.

We looked behind the scenes last week as brothers and director photography duo Santiago and Mauricio Sierra teased out how to explore past, present and future notions of beauty. Now thanks to our friends at i-D, we can show you the resulting music video-style meditation, “Clubland.”

Santiago and Mauricio Sierra explained that they wanted to show how our notions of beauty are shaped by subcultures and individuals who are constantly stretching the limits. It’s the music that ties it all together on the wild ride they’ve captured.

Rather than translate the sounds of each era, the energetic soundtrack softly echoes the chosen era — and for the scenes that represent the future, the music hints at what’s possible.

Santiago & Mauricio focused their lens on subcultures when i-D and Microsoft challenged them to create a journey through time. Their message is that notions beauty are shaped by individuals pushing limits.

By zooming in on blitz kids, b-boys and grunge fans, the brothers sought to bring out the sparks of youth and expression that transcend any single scene.

They teamed up with makeup artist Ralph Siciliano for i-D’s “Beautiful Collaborations” project. Microsoft interest stems from how notions of beauty shapes the tools we use (their latest device, the HP Spectre for example is a hybrid laptop-tablet).

“Through the decades and time, it gets crazier and crazier,” Santiago says.

“We envision in the far future to be quite abstract,” Mauricio adds. “As the visuals have an evolution, the music as well is going to progress.”
