In a land far, far away… — Canadian rabble-rouser Xavier Dolan selected emerging director Kara Smith’s Wild Space as a winner of Magnum ice cream and i-D’s Be True To Your Pleasure short film competition.

“The best stories start by announcing their occurrence in a land far, far away…” explains the narrator of Kara Smiths’s Wild Space – and who are we to argue?

Wild Space was one of three winning films selected by Québecois upstart auteur Xavier Dolan from Magnum ice cream and i-D’s Be True To Your Pleasure short film competition.

Emerging filmmakers were invited to submit short film ideas based around the idea of personal pleasure and the joy of letting go. After the three winners were announced in August, they received funding, production support and mentorship from Dolan himself.

Andrew Cumming’s Kai and Patrick Downing’s Zap were also selected, but our favourite is Kara Smith’s surreal tale of a fisherman who, upon returning home to find his lover shacked up with a commodore, does the fishermanly thing and challenges the imposter to a guns-blazing duel.
