Photography As Activism — Profiled in a powerful new documentary, photographer Jo-Anne McArthur's work urges us to rethink our relationship with animals.

Photographer Jo-Anne McArthur is determined to expose a truth that most of would like to ignore: billions of animals suffer globally due to our desires for food, clothing, cosmetics and entertainment.

The Ghosts in Our Machine follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she documents the living conditions of animals in the US, Europe and Canada; including breaking into fur farms and animal laboratories to reveal shocking cases of abuse.

Director Liz Marshall manages the difficult task of crafting a beautiful and moving film from harrowing subject matter in part by focussing on Jo-Anne’s heartfelt passion and empathy for animals.

The Ghosts in Our Machine is released Friday, July 11 and there is a special screening of the film followed by a panel discussion at Hackney Picturehouse on Tuesday, July 15 at Hackney Picturehouse.
