Huck's Best of the Week

Huck's Best of the Week

Notes From a Week on the Road — The best from the last seven days in Huck, featuring DIY music stories from Tommy Guerrero and The Great Escape.

Music was the focus this week for Huck. As we launched our film of skate legend Tommy Guerrero’s first-ever European tour and then explored Brighton with up-and-coming bands that have great stories to tell.

Tommy Guerrero film

The latest Huck film is a postcard from the road as Tommy and his bandmates Fredo Ortiz (the Beastie Boys’ live drummer) and bassist Josh Lippi drive across borders and connect the dots between the world of skate and the DIY music scene. Thanks to Levi’s for helping make the film possible.

Huck x The Great Escape

We delved deeper into the DIY music landscape in Brighton, where Huck hosted its first stage at The Great Escape, Europe’s largest new music showcase. We were very proud to present an international line-up on New Zealand’s French for Rabbits, Young Summer from Nashville and from the UK: up-and-coming indie rockers Blessa along with BBC 6 Music darling Oliver Wilde.

If you weren’t among Saturday night’s capacity crowd at Komedia Studio Bar, you can still catch them on tour in the coming days and weeks. We recommend you do!

Also at The Great Escape, Huck began collecting bands’ DIY stories as they do all they can to get their music out there. Courtney Barnett, Hollie Cook, Seekae, and Big Ups share their road stories in our DIY or Die series (Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3— with more to come). Also check out our interview with NYC’s Big Ups.

James Edson: Persian Rugs

Wayward Gallery owner James Edson launched Persian Rugs, the third installment of a zine that he’s been making to document his friends and the places they’ve been. We hosted the launch at Huck’s gallery 71a on Thursday as his photos of poodles, carving knives, bucket hats and neon lights took over our walls. Read more about James and the project.

Coming up

On May 19, for one week Huck will be taking over part of London’s Old Street station with our friends from Puck Collective, The Photocopy Club and Satta Skateboards for a series of workshops and activities to help limber up your creative muscles. Stay tuned for more details on how you can take part.
