Role Model Hermit — In an ever more digital, online world, we ask our favourite artists about their most cherished pieces of physical culture. Today, it’s art rock fabulists mary in the junkyard.
The music video for ‘Blood’, mary in the junkyard’s latest single from the band’s debut album Role Model Hermit, sees lead singer and guitarist Clari Freeman-Taylor go on a fever dream date with a faceless yeti. London’s Chinatown, the cinema and the seaside are all visited, with the song exploring the blossoming love of a newly formed relationship.
Filmed with analogue retro grain and marked by a swirling guitar lead, it’s a grooving introduction into the London based three piece’s style, and their biggest project to date. Released today, July 3, Role Model Hermit is an oft melancholic, always sublime debut from the three-piece band, which is a sonic fable of British mundanity and folkloric magic.
With their art-rock style and experimental sensibilities, the band have caught the attention of Marina Abramović, with the legendary performance artist booking them to play a private show for herself and her friends in New York. As they set out on their biggest tour to date, we wanted to find out more about their creative inspirations, so invited them to take part in Analogue Appreciation, our series celebrating physical culture in an ever more digital world. Clari Freeman-Taylor — My desk
It is my favourite place to sit, draw and make sounds. I put reminders for myself all over the wall which I forget to read. My speakers are on a slant so I have to tip my head like a bird when listening to mixes.

My new pencil holder which was found in a rock pool. I checked that there were no creatures inside before taking it.
Clari Freeman-Taylor — Self-made lantern
Me constructing a lantern in the shape of a boat in my bedroom which is also my lantern-building studio. It will hopefully hang above us on stage in September once I have erected the sail and mast.

Saya Barbaglia — Pinecone
A gigantic pinecone from a road trip we did in California, on our week off from supporting Wet Leg during their US tour last year. Clari and I saw them on the side of the road and snuck a bunch back to London in a kick drum! Reminds me of how wild and free I felt that week and a reminder against spiritual deforestation in the city.
David Addison — Drawing
A drawing by Clari of the three of us sat in the front of the huge void-like mural in the Rothko chapel. I like how we’re close together but still off in our own little worlds. It reminds me of the incredible places we’ve been able to visit because of our music and friendship. It also brings me back to the feeling of sitting in front of the paintings and being completely transported.
