Huck 84 — For our second 20th anniversary issue, we spotlight 20 people and groups providing the world with a hopeful future.

Our second 20th anniversary issue, Huck 84: It Starts With Us, is hot off the press. With our S/S issue earlier in the year taking a reflective look at the journeys we go through in life, for our latest we look to the people shaping our present, and taking action to provide the world with hope for the future.

The cover is shot by Los Angeles photographer and visual artist Alexis Gross, who along with writer Anna Zane, dived into the new generation of LA scene kids, and their fresh interpretation of a subculture that many thought had been consigned to the internet archive.

Fittingly, the magazine features 20 profiles, with features on musicians Tony Bontana, Lava La Rue, Natty and Kibo, global women skateboarding crew Skater Uktis, legendary taggers TOX and Rocco and his Brothers, actor Ahilya Bamroo, journalism innovators YÜTH Magazine, Joshi Hermann and Emma Garland, teenager Mia Heller who has invented a revolutionary water filtration system, and many more inspiring people and stories.

It’s a doozy. Read what Huck’s Editor Josh Jones has to say about it in his editor’s letter below. Sign up to Club Huck+ to receive it through your letterbox, or grab a copy from all good newsagents.

As an editor of a magazine, you’re trusted to steer the ship in your direction for a while. You take the wheel from the editor who came before you, and eventually pass it on to the next. So, as Huck celebrates 20 years of spotlighting some of the most inspiring people and minds across the world, it feels good and right to tip our hats to the editors who’ve come before me: the founding father Vince Medeiros, Andrea Kurland, and Niall Opie-Meres Flynn. Plus, of course, all the other editorial staff who’ve worked on Huck over the past two decades.

The world is a nightmare scenario at the moment. It’s too easy to doomscroll our way into apathy, and feel that nothing can be fixed. But there is a way – just go and do something. The way things are going there’s no point in waiting for help to come – it’s time to go and do it.

This issue focuses on people across the world who have stood up and got on with things. They’re making things better.

To quote the late, great Chester Bennington:

It starts with us.
